Sana Security Honored by Info Security Products Guide with the Shaping Info Security 2006 Industry Award
Dr. Matthew Williamson Recognized for Leadership in Technology Innovation
SAN MATEO, Calif. – October 16, 2006 – Sana
Security, Inc., a security software company, today announced that
Dr. Matthew Williamson, principal scientist at Sana Security, has
been honored with the “Shaping Info Security 2006 Industry
Award” by Info Security Products Guide, a Silicon Valley
Communications publication and the world’s leading publication
on security-related products and technologies. The Shaping Info
Security awards honor individuals whose research, ideas and innovations
are positively impacting the security industry and addressing today’s
highly sophisticated and blended attack environment. Dr. Williamson
has been recognized for his research and work in developing behavior-based,
proactive anti-malware technology that mitigates excessive administration
and update procedures.
“Behind every successful security vendor that is consistently
pushing new areas of research and enhancing security as a result,
there is one obvious characteristic and that is the brilliance
in research, engineering and development they have supporting their
vision.” said Rick Justice, chief technology editor with
Info Security Products Guide. “We were most impressed with
Matthew Williamson’s achievements in shaping a new security
landscape and are proud to acknowledge his positive contribution
to the industry in awarding him the Shaping Info Security award.”
In his relatively short career, Dr. Williamson has helped move
the needle of traditional security to advance protection across
the enterprise. Recognized for his contributions in researching
and applying multi-layered analysis of malware behavior to create
proactive anti-malware solutions, Dr. Williamson’s research
has challenged the industry to look beyond traditional signature-based
solutions, which were created more then 17 years ago when data
protection was not top of mind, and which are limiting in protection
scope and often compromise IT operations. He continues to support
Sana’s mission of constantly innovating new and cutting-edge
technology and has been a main driver in developing Sana’s
patent-pending technology Active Malware Defense Technology v2
(Active MDT), the first commercially available anti-malware technology
to detect and remove malicious software without relying on signatures
and scanning. The technology works by tracking the relationships
between the various components of malware, instead of single executables,
as malware is often split into multiple pieces in order to evade
traditional protection mechanisms. Williamson’s contributions
to Sana Security have enabled the company to provide proactive
solutions that are capable of staying ahead of the evolving threat
landscape and can safeguard enterprises and end-users more effectively
and with less human intervention than ever before possible.
“Our Internet experiences as we know them are changing with
the steady growth of online collaboration and active content creation.
This growth is also changing the daily challenges of security professionals
world-wide, forcing them to look beyond the concerns of today in
order to project what’s to come,” said John Zicker,
CEO, Sana Security. “We’re proud to have the expertise
and talent that we have here at Sana. Matthew Williamson continues
to push the envelope in security development and has supported
our goals in becoming a leader in the industry by creating anti-malware
solutions that instantly and constantly protect against emerging
vulnerabilities that are common among the Internet’s evolving
collaborative platforms.”
Sana’s behavioral heuristic technology, Active Malware Defense
v2 (Active MDT v2), sits at the core of its anti-malware solution
to protect client desktops in real-time by detecting stealthy malware
and removing malicious code. As malware is detected , the information
is transmitted to Sana Labs and published through Sana Security’s
new Active MDT Center to assist Sana customers with the information
necessary to adjust security postures to meet these emerging “in
the wild” threats. This information is timely and gives a
relative comparison of how well Active MDT technology does in detecting,
identifying and removing malware long before legacy AV solutions
create signatures. As an example, On September 22, the automated
forensic analysis generated by Sana Labs revealed a glimpse into
the impact of sneaky malware and its alarming effects impacting
system security:
- 41 different varieties of malware had gone undetected by traditional
AV solutions since May 12
- Major AV vendors took up to 21 days to detect malware,
after it had been identified by Active MDT Center
- Popular AV solutions missed up to 68 percent of malicious
threats in their initial scan, and up to 54 percent afterward
- The most common categories and variants of malware were
attributed to stealthy Trojans
The technology and subsequent data collected provides proactive
functionality and offers broader threat protection through Sana’s
anti-malware client solution, Primary Response SafeConnect. Installed
worldwide and collecting and reporting on known and unknown threats,
it offers behavior-based malware removal and ease-of-use for defending
against today’s leading threats. Unlike legacy reactive solutions
that require updates, signatures and scanning, Primary Response
SafeConnect uses a multi-behavioral approach to examine the operational
characteristics unique to each PC and can instantly and constantly
protect PCs online or offline, connected or not and with no further
action required on behalf of the user, including signature downloads
and system scanning.
