OEM Program
We are living, and operating, in a new digital world in which the nature
of our network’s perimeter has evolved- to meet the need for customers,
vendors, partners and employees to require access to critical business information,
applications and services. However, this increased level of interconnectivity
also raises new security challenges at a time when the incidence and sophistication
of malicious activity by worms, viruses, hackers is constantly on the rise.
As a result, organizations must ensure an effective balance between distributed
access and appropriate security (and availability) of core information assets.
The simple fact is that traditional security methods of access
control, intrusion detection and anti-virus protection alone are
not enough. According to the Yankee Group, over 80% of respondents
indicated that they had experienced viruses or worms in 2003 and
40% denial of service attacks (The Yankee Group 2003 Enterprise
Security Spending Survey). And, Aberdeen Group recently reported
that companies suffering business disruption from web-based attacks
are losing an average of $2 million in revenue (CRN, 7/7/04).

Protection at the perimeter, network, host and client are all
important components of a contemporary security solution. As a result,
companies and government entities today are increasingly adopting
a multi-layered, proactive approach to security at both the network
and the host to ensure business continuity. They must also concentrate
on developing a defense-in-depth security posture comprised of best
of breed products that effectively serve the business and IT environment
of their enterprise and/or government organizations.
Patches and updates issued by vendors are often available too late—after
damage has already been done. Consider:
- In its first three minutes of life, the Slammer worm was scanning 55 million
targets per second. By the ten minute mark, 90% of all vulnerable machines
on the planet were infected. (CIO, November 2003)
- Code Red infected 360,000 computers WW in less than 14 hours, causing
$1.2B in damages.
- While fewer than 15% of all attacks occur within the first month of a
vulnerability announcement today, that number is expected to reach roughly
30% by 2006. (John Pescatore, VP and Research Fellow, Gartner Research)
